Street Party Plans

In what will be one of the largest national celebrations in our lifetimes, the country it seems is ready to party!

According to a Local Government Association media release published earlier this month, there are already 3,500 Diamond Jubilee street parties planned for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend in June.

Councils across the country have received 3,500 road closure applications for Diamond Jubilee street parties to date, and thousands more applications are anticipated over the next three months.

This figure does not include the numerous parties to be held in other public spaces or private events, nor does it necessarily include all of the Big Jubilee Lunch celebrations planned.

Street parties have been held in the UK since the early 20th century, and originated as ‘peace teas’ or ‘tea parties’ for children, following the close of the First World War.

Traditionally street parties are held in the summer months, and are an opportunity for people to come together with friends and neighbours to celebrate Jubilees, Coronations and Royal Weddings.

The Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April 2011 attracted 5,500 road closure applications and it is estimated that one million people attended street parties across the nation.

Other historic events that have inspired thousands of street parties include The Queen’s Coronation in 1953, The Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, The Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana in 1981 and The Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002.

If you’d like to let people know about a Street Party happening in your area you can post details of your event on the 2012 Queen’s Diamond Jubilee interactive Street Party Map available here.

It’s open to users worldwide and has the facility to include the date, time and location of your Street Party.  You can even add details about activities taking place and ticket prices if they apply.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee official celebrations will centre around an extended weekend between 2 – 5 June 2012.  Events include the Diamond Jubilee Pageant, The Epsom Derby, Big Jubilee Lunch, Thames River Pageant, Queens’ Diamond Jubilee Concert, Jubilee Beacons and the Service of Thanksgiving.
